- Exchange Kraken launches pre-IPO perpetual settlement contracts for stocks.
- We are talking about the companies OpenAI and Anthropic.
Cryptocurrency exchange Kraken has offered retail traders a unique opportunity to speculate on private company valuations before their official initial public offerings.
What are the new tools?
The new derivatives are traded on the platform under the specifications PF_OPENAIXUSD and PF_ANTHROPICXUSD. These are essentially perpetual, settled contracts tied to the estimated market value of OpenAI and Anthropic.
Purchasing such derivatives does not grant the user shareholder status. Contract holders do not receive voting rights, are not entitled to corporate dividends, and have no legal claim to the actual assets of these tech startups.
Instead, all transactions are settled in US dollars using an advanced multi-collateral margin system. This allows market participants to profit from the expected rise or fall in company capitalization, as well as hedge existing positions in other assets.

Leverage and pricing without a spot market
The Kraken exchange offers traders leverage of up to 5x. This means opening a basic position requires an initial margin of 20%. The basic maintenance margin is set at 10%. However, as trading volume increases, the platform applies a tiered risk management system, automatically reducing the maximum leverage.
The main problem with such assets is the lack of a public market price. To address this, the exchange developed its own indicator, the Kraken PreMarket Synthetic Index . This synthetic index is formed solely based on trader activity within the futures order book itself.
To protect users from sharp price anomalies in conditions of thin liquidity, algorithmic exponential smoothing is used. Furthermore, the contract mark price is strictly maintained within a strict range of ±0,25% of the synthetic index value. This protective mechanism is designed to limit unwanted mass liquidations of positions caused by short-term squeezes.
However, artificial pricing does not protect traders from the risk of collective revaluation of an asset, since traditional arbitrage with the real spot market is physically impossible here.
Transition period in case of IPO
If OpenAI or Anthropic ultimately go public, the exchange has already planned for the adaptation process. Once the official IPO takes place, the platform intends to abandon the synthetic index and peg contracts to a real market index of tokenized stocks (xStocks).
This transition is expected to trigger a complete review of funding rates, position limits, and margin requirements. If IPO plans are cancelled or reliable market data is unavailable, the exchange reserves the right to forcibly delist contracts paying at internal settlement value.
