The head of the Polish Olympic Committee, Radosław Piesiewicz, was arrested by prosecutors on charges of accepting bribes from the cryptocurrency exchange Zondacrypto.
According to Euro.news, Radosław Piesiewicz, an influential figure in Polish sports, was arrested after being accused of accepting bribes in exchange for sponsorship contracts. Local media also reported that the CEO of Zondacrypto gifted the head of the Olympic Committee a Patek Philippe watch worth over $40,000, which he claimed to have purchased himself with cash.
The prosecutor's office will provide additional information after the completion of the proceedings at the Silesian branch of the National Prosecutor's Office, said Polish Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek.
However, it was previously reported that Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk accused Zondacrypto of ties to the Russian mafia and intelligence agencies. In April, the exchange declared bankruptcy due to a liquidity crisis. Prior to this, Zondacrypto had become the general sponsor of the Polish Olympic Committee, and in February, it announced plans to pay Winter Games medalists in cryptocurrency.
While the investigation into Piesiewicz is ongoing, high-ranking Polish officials have already spoken out. For example, Sports and Tourism Minister Jakub Rutnicki stated that Piesiewicz "disgraced Polish Olympics and exploited the image of Polish athletes."
