Altcoin

Altcoin is the name given to all cryptocurrencies except Bitcoin. The first altcoins appeared in 2011. Their goal was to overcome all of Bitcoin's technical limitations.

There are thousands of altcoins; for example, at the end of 2021, Coinmarketcap listed 15,893 altcoins. New altcoins are being added every day.

Most altcoins are little more than just clones of Bitcoin, changing only 1-2 minor characteristics, such as the speed of coin transactions on the network, the method of coin distribution, or the mining algorithm. Most of these coins do not last long.
