Coinbase has disabled a wallet used by a group working to defend Silk Road creator Ross Ulbricht. According to members of the Free Ross campaign and other sources, the wallet used to pay lawyers was frozen Thursday after receiving a payment of 16,5 BTC ($40,200).
After news of the event leaked online, members of the Bitcoin community quickly offered to help the group, and John Love of Abra, after speaking with Free Ross, committed to resolving the situation.
Coinbase's actions were described by group members as "unfair play." Veteran Bitcoiner Brian Hoffmann drew the community's attention to the exchange's recent appointment of Federal Attorney General Katherine Haun to its board of directors.
Haun was involved in the case of corrupt secret service agents involved in Bitcoin fraud, but she had no connection to the Ulbricht case and was not involved in his sentencing. Therefore, respondents called Hoffman's allusion "extremely misguided."
At the same time, Coinbase has faced problems on multiple fronts, with much of the exchange's user base reeling from widespread outages in recent weeks. Due to disruptions and slowdowns in transactions, many traders were unable to take advantage of market price fluctuations and were left extremely dissatisfied.
The Free Ross organization subsequently confirmed receiving an additional donation totaling 4 BTC ($9,750).
